Artist's Statement
John began drawing as a young child. His father, a draftsman and designer of homes, encouraged such drawing and taught him some of the basic rules of perspective drawing early on. He then studied law and set aside his drawing activities for the next 40 years as he practiced law and helped raise his family. With the encouragement of his wife, who felt that he might still possess some latent artistic skills, he resumed drawing several years ago, and took several courses at the Westchester Community College Art Center.
Eventually, John drifted from drawing to painting at which point he discovered a passion for oil painting, both still-life and plein air. He has taken many courses over the last few years in order to develop his skills in these areas. His most significant recent influence has been his instructor, Andrew Lattimore, a European classically trained artist, who has often reminded John that in the field of art "it is never too late and that something can still be accomplished."
As with most other artists in the oil medium, he delights in shapes, forms, contrasts, and colors, but is also particularly cognizant of the drawings underlying his paintings. He likes to employ, to a moderate degree, some of the perspective tools taught to him by his father in an effort to establish senses of volume and three-dimensionality, but tries not to allow this to distract from the subject itself. John hopes that some who observe his artwork will find enjoyment so that he can, indeed, say that "something was still accomplished."
